Build a stronger, more connected relationship

Every relationship goes through difficult seasons. Maybe you find yourselves having the same arguments over and over, struggling to communicate without becoming defensive, or feeling increasingly distant from one another. Perhaps parenting, stress, or major life transitions have made it harder to feel like a team.

When these patterns become entrenched, it can be difficult to find a way forward on your own. Couples therapy offers a space to slow things down, better understand one another, and begin making meaningful changes together.

My approach to couples therapy is collaborative, compassionate, and practical. I work with couples to understand what’s happening beneath the surface of their conflicts, improve communication, and develop healthier ways of navigating differences. The goal isn’t to decide who’s right or wrong, but to help you understand each other more fully and build a relationship that works better for both of you.

How couples therapy can help

You don’t have to be on the verge of separation to benefit from couples therapy. Sometimes, the most valuable time to seek support is when you recognize that something isn’t working and want to address it before the distance grows.

Couples therapy can help you:

  • Break recurring conflict cycles. Understand why the same disagreements keep happening and learn to respond differently when tensions rise.
  • Communicate more effectively. Express your needs, concerns, and emotions in ways that make understanding more likely.
  • Navigate defensiveness and resentment. Learn to hear one another without immediately feeling the need to defend yourself, counterattack, or withdraw.
  • Rebuild emotional connection. Strengthen intimacy, trust, and the sense that you’re on the same team.
  • Navigate parenting and family stress. Work through differences in parenting styles, household responsibilities, and competing demands on your time and energy.
  • Work through major life transitions. Find your footing together during changes in identity, career, family life, or personal priorities.
  • Clarify what comes next. If you’re uncertain about the future of your relationship, therapy can help you explore your options with greater clarity and intention.

Understanding the patterns that keep you stuck

Often, couples aren’t simply fighting about the issue in front of them. A disagreement about chores, parenting, or time together can quickly become a deeper conflict about feeling appreciated, respected, understood, or supported.

One partner may push harder to resolve a problem, while the other pulls away to avoid making things worse. The more one pursues, the more the other withdraws. Both end up feeling misunderstood, and the original issue becomes even harder to resolve.

These patterns can develop even when both partners care deeply about each other. Over time, however, they can erode trust and connection.

In therapy, we’ll work to recognize these cycles and understand what each of you is experiencing within them. Rather than treating either partner as the problem, we’ll look at how the dynamic between you may be contributing to the difficulties you’re facing. From there, we can practice new ways of communicating, responding to difficult emotions, and addressing disagreements.

My approach to couples counseling

I believe meaningful change begins with feeling safe enough to be honest, curious enough to understand a different perspective, and willing to try something new.

My approach is person-centered and makes use of Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT) techniques. That means I’ll work to understand each partner’s perspective without judgment while helping you identify concrete ways to improve your relationship.

Depending on your needs, our work may include:

  • Recognizing and interrupting unhelpful conflict patterns.
  • Practicing active listening and clearer expression of needs.
  • Learning to manage emotional reactions during difficult conversations.
  • Developing more productive ways to approach disagreements.
  • Strengthening appreciation, connection, and mutual understanding.
  • Identifying practical changes that support a healthier partnership.

Couples therapy isn’t about eliminating every disagreement or making you agree on everything. It’s about developing the skills and understanding to navigate differences without repeatedly hurting one another or losing sight of the relationship you want to build.

What if we’re not sure couples therapy will help?

It’s understandable to feel hesitant about starting therapy, particularly if previous conversations have gone nowhere or you’re worried that sessions will turn into an exercise in assigning blame.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before beginning. You also don’t need to agree on every aspect of the problem. Part of our work will be understanding how each of you sees the relationship and what you hope might change.

My role is not to take sides or dictate what your relationship should look like. It’s to help you have more productive conversations, understand one another more deeply, and explore realistic paths forward.
